Sophomore guard Andrew Wang (Germantown, Md. / Poolesville) led the Caltech men’s basketball team in scoring for the first time in his career in Saturday’s home loss to the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Wang slashed his way to 13 points and made four of his team-high six free throw attempts. He also connected on his lone three-point attempt in the second half at about the 10-minute mark in the midst of a 13-5 Caltech run and even led the team with five steals. The next two highest scorers were senior Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and freshman Bret Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif. / Santa Fe Christian), both of whom had nine points.
Caltech’s pair of freshman forward/centers Calvin Huh (Fort Lee, N.J. / Bergen Tech) and Ross Carter (Sudbury, Mass. / The Rivers School) also saw their most meaningful minutes of the season so far. Huh scored five points in his Caltech debut, three of which came from free throws. Carter, meanwhile played three quarters of the game, finished second on the team in minutes only to freshman guard Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) and scored seven points of his own.
The Beavers held their own on the glass, matching the Banana Slugs with 30 rebounds and even won the turnover battle 14-15. Though the Beavers opened the game with a 14-9 lead that lasted for the first seven minutes, they ultimately fell into a 17-point halftime hole and were forced to play catch up with the Banana Slugs’ up-tempo offense for the rest of the game.
Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the 0-4 Beavers will next embark on a three-game road trip in Oregon where they will be looking for their first win of the season. Caltech will first take on Linfield College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday before taking on Pacific University (Ore.) on Thursday and Lewis and Clark College on Friday.
