Freshman Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) impressed again as Caltech men’s basketball dropped the opening game of its Northwest trip at Linfield College on Wednesday night.
Andrews tied with senior Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) for the team lead with 12 points, hitting two three-pointers, and paced the squad in both assists (four) and steals (five) over a team-high 37 minutes. Senior David LeBaron (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) also scored in double figures with 11 points while adding six boards, three assists and three steals. As a team, however, the Beavers were outshot from the field (47-39 percent), three-point range (37-26 percent) and the free-throw line (88-61 percent) while also losing the rebounding (36-27) and turnover (18-15) battles.
Linfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead as the Beavers missed their first three shots and turned the ball over four times in the opening three-and-a-half minutes. Once Caltech managed to score its first points, the hosts tacked on 10 straight to take a double-digit lead at 14-2 less than seven minutes into play. Andrews nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five midway through the first half, but the Wildcats extended the lead throughout the half to a high of 20 before halftime, when Caltech trailed 41-23.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger’s squad was able to trim the deficit back to as few as seven points at 50-43 with 9:08 remaining, but Linfield would recover to stretch it back out to double digits and closed the game out with a 74-54 victory.
