Sophomore Brent Cahill (Laguna Beach, Calif. / St. Margaret’s) slashed his way to 24 points off the bench in Caltech men’s basketball’s SCIAC home loss to Redlands University on Thursday.
Cahill proved especially proficient at drawing contact and finding his way to the foul line. The winger went 8-for-18 from the field and made six of his 10 free throw attempts. The Beavers’ top scoring option off the bench added four assists, all of which came in the first half in addition to four rebounds to round out one of his best offensive performances of the season.
The Beavers put themselves in a position to move to 3-1 in SCIAC play by outshooting and outscoring the Bulldogs in the first half. Caltech shot approximately 43 percent in that time frame and entered the second frame with a three-point lead. Along with Cahill, senior Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) contributed with eight first-half points, including two three-pointers.
The Bulldogs regained control down the stretch, however by going on a 14-4 run in the game’s final six minutes. They yielded two 20-point scorers and went 13-for-18 from the free throw line in the second half. Conversely, the Beavers went 0-for-5 on second half free throws after getting to the line a combined 11 times in the first half. With the exception of a Cahill layup and an Alex Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) three-pointer with 12 seconds to go, Caltech could not muster any offense from the field in the game’s final three minutes.
Senior David LeBaron (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) nearly hit the 10-rebound plateau, finishing with nine rebounds to go with six points and a team-high four steals. Andrews, meanwhile finished the game with 15 points, three steals and two assists.
Now 2-2 in league play, Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will be looking for their third SCIAC victory of the season when they host second-place California Lutheran College on Saturday.
