From Staff Reports

It’s not often a game is over after just one quarter, but that was exactly the case Monday against visiting Westridge.

First-place Flintridge Prep outscored Westridge, 33-4, after one quarter, and then cruised to a 57-32 Prep League victory.

Prep (16-2 overall, 5-0 in league) heads into the final stretch alone atop the Prep League standings, but the Rebels still have two games against Poly and another with Chadwick.

Taylor Yoshida led Prep with 17 points, while Renae Tamura had 15 and Kaitlyn Chen added 13.

Juliana Favela led Westridge (6-8, 2-4) with 9 points.

“Lately, we have been trying to get out early on teams and take control of a game right away and not wait,” Prep coach Kevin Kiyomura said. “We put a stamp on the game right away, and we did so with our defense. We created turnovers that led to easy baskets.”

Prep has a trio of road Prep League games next week when they travel to Firebaugh on Tuesday, go to Poly on Wednesday and finish out the week on Friday at Rio Hondo Prep.

Kiyomura said stats don’t always represent all a player contributes and he wanted to point out his center, Natalie Benn.

“As of late, Natalie has been playing well at center,” Kiyomura said. “She’s playing well on defense and is picking up a lot of rebounds.”

Westridge will host Mayfield today (Friday) at 5:15.
