Sophomore Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood) led Caltech by winning two events in the Beavers’ first SCIAC home dual meet of the season against visiting Whittier Collge on Saturday.
First, Lu completed the men’s 1,000-yard freestyle in 10 minutes, 28.85 seconds, 24 seconds faster than the next best swimmer in the event. Later, he took first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.12). The sophomore’s versatility kept the Beavers competitive, but ultimately fell to the Poets, 126-78, in team competition.
Fellow sophomore Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) also claimed a victory for Caltceh when he won the 100-yard butterfly (52.37), finishing a second-and-a-half off his Caltech record time. Senior Leon Ding (Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park) finished second in the same event (56.27). Also of note, sophomore Jonathan Willett (Edina, Minn. / Edina) posted a personal best in the 50-yard freestyle (22.17) and came within less than half a second away from winning the event. Freshman Alex Moraru (Southlake, Texas / Carroll Senior) came even closer to winning the 500-yard freestyle, finishing less than one tenth of a second off the leader (5:06.95).
Head Coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers will be back at it again when they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to take on CMS and California Lutheran College next Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
