Calum Torrie, and Lachlan Cameron, the Mayfield High School co-head soccer head coaches were excited Thursday evening.
After freshman Nadia O’Reilly’s second-half goal, the Cubs earned a 1-0 Prep League win.
That might not sound like a big deal on its own.
But Torrie and Cameron were celebrating what they believe was Mayfield’s first soccer win over the Panthers since President George W. Bush was early into his first term, and many of their players were no older than 3 years old.
The win put the Cubs right in the middle of a four-way race for second place in the Prep League.
Mayfield (5-5-4 overall, 2-2-1 in league) is now just one-game behind Poly and Westridge, and the Cubs have Chadwick on their tails as well.
Next up for the Cubs is Tuesday when they travel to Westride at 3:15.
Poly (12-4-3, 3-2) will host Firebaugh today (Friday) at 3:30
“It’s been over 15 years since we beat Poly,” Cameron said. “Today was the first (game) we played as a unit all season.”
