Freshmen Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) and Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) each picked up big wins and combined for a third win for the Caltech women’s tennis team in its season debut at nationally-ranked Linfield College on Friday. Thanks to Zhou and others, the Beavers nearly stole the victory, but ultimately fell to the No. 35 Wildcats, 5-4.

Both freshmen quickly proved themselves as key additions to the team, first with Zhou defeating Marisa Doveri at third singles, 6-4, 6-1. Zhou then teamed with Bodrova to defeat Riley Clayeux and Basia Kopecka in the second doubles spot, 8-5. All of the doubles matches were played in eight-game pro sets. Bodrova had the largest margin of victory of the day for Caltech, earning a victory over Kelsey Bartlett, 6-2, 6-0.

Meanwhile, second-ranked singles player sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) picked up a routine victory over Clayeux, 6-3, 6-1. Moriyama also competed in doubles with top-ranked singles player Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) in what one of two outcome-deciding matches of the day, both of which involved Reisler. The duo dropped their closely contested match, 8-6, and Reisler came a few breaks away from pulling out the victory in her singles match, with the second set being decided in a tiebreaker. The sophomore ended up on the short end of things, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Senior Sofia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) came perhaps the closest to earning the decisive point for the Beavers when she took first set from Michelle Ly, 7-5, before dropping the final two sets 6-2, 6-2.
