From Staff Reports
Two St. Francis football stars began their Wednesday morning doing what every high school athlete dreams of.
They signed on the dotted line to continue their athletic and educational careers at the next level.
St. Francis was the area’s best football team all season.
On a number of occasions, they beat teams that many so-called experts thought they had no chance of winning.
On a few other, they held prolific offense’s to a fraction of what they were averaging.
Two key reasons for why they were able to have so much success, was because of linebacker Maxx Jakeway and two-way player Daniel Scott.
Jakeway led the Golden Knights (9-2) with 78 tackles, which includes 3 sacks, and all that despite blowing out his knee late in the season.
Jakeway signed to play at Union College.
“St. Francis has been a blessing in my life, and has shaped who I am as a person for the past four years,” Jakeway said. “I will never forget the brotherhood and the lessons that the coaches have taught me. I am very grateful and excited for the opportunity to continue my football and academic career at Union. I cannot wait for the new experience’s that lie ahead of me in the next four years.”
Scott, who was the Pasadena Sports Now’s All-Purpose Player of the Year, was arguably the best athlete and most versatile player in the entire area.
He caught 31 passes for 688 yards, including 10 receiving touchdowns.
Scott was second in tackles with Will Mudie (70), first in interceptions (5) and scored touchdowns by way of receiving, rushing and special teams.
Scott announced over the weekend that he will play at the University of California.
St. Francis coach Jim Bonds couldn’t have been more proud of his two seniors.
Said Bonds: “Maxx Jakeway and Daniel Scott were both such important members of our 2016 football team. Maxx brought a toughness to our team like nobody I’ve ever coached before. For him to come back and lead our team in tackles in our playoff game after blowing out his knee earlier in the season, says all you need to know about his toughness and love for the game and his teammates.
Daniel Scott did everything he could possibly do for our team this year. He showed that with his last minute heroics in the Palos Verdes game with an interception in our own end-zone with 1:16 left and catching the touchdown in the opposite end-zone with time running out!
They will both be missed!”
