The Caltech women’s tennis team has been listed as the fifth-best team in the SCIAC per the conference’s first preseason poll. The Beavers came in four votes ahead of Chapman University and slotted in right behind California Lutheran University, the 40th-ranked team in the nation per the ITA’s latest poll back in November. All four teams ahead of the Beavers are listed in the ITA national rankings, identifying the SCIAC as one of the toughest conferences in the country.

Led by freshmen Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) and Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School), the Beavers have started strong in non-conference play. After nearly knocking off 35th-ranked Linfield College two Saturdays ago in Oregon, the women responded by picking up a more decisive victory over West region No. 18 George Fox University on the following day. Zhou and Bodrova have already proven to be key additions to the team, working well together separately and as a unit. They hold a 2-0 record together as a doubles team and have yet to lose in singles competition. Along with returning #1 and #2 singles sophomores Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond), Caltech could be headed for an historic season.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will look to start strong in conference play and get above .500 early in the season when they travel to rival Occidental College for a 10 a.m. match slated for this Saturday, Feb. 11. The team will then return home on Friday, Feb. 17 when they take on Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m.
