From Staff Reports

Juliana Favela has been nothing short of a superstar.

The Westridge senior carries much of the weight of an historic run on her back in a series of postseason victories that no one outside the Tigers’ gym saw coming.

Favela scored a team-best 22 points on Wednesday night, including her 10-foot jumper with 10 seconds to play to give Westridge a thrilling 51-50 victory at Coachella Valley.

Westridge had already made history getting to the quarterfinals for the first time, and the victory has the Tigers one win from an improbable title game appearance.

Ashley Wei had 9 for Westridge, while Sarah Rozario and Stephanie Davis had 8 each for the Tigers, which, in a one-point playoff road victory, every point is invaluable.

Westridge (14-9) has now won 8 of its last 9 games and will host Crean Lutheran (17-10) on Saturday at 7.

Vanessa Madera scored a game-high 25 for Coachella Valley (11-14), in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 5-AA playoffs.

The school released a teaser for those that weren’t there.

“And, since most of you missed last night’s game, I’ve included the 4th quarter link below. The team jumped to a 16-4 lead in the 1st quarter then held on ahead by 10 points at the half and heading into the 4th quarter. Coachella Valley then turned on their offense and surged to a 23 point scoring half. The Tigers managed 14 points to edge a 51-50 victory. Juliana Favela ’17 had a long coast to coast drive to get the Tigers within 2 points! Ella Wood ’17 had a tremendous offensive rebound to keep the ball alive and sent Ashley Wei to the line. Ashley hit one shot, then a CV guard got the board, but traveled. The Tigers got the ball out of bounds and the final play went to Juliana who scored the winning shot! Epic!”
