Caltech men’s tennis recorded an 8-1 regional win over West Region No. 18 Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday.
Four Beavers went 2-0 between singles and doubles in the rout as Caltech swept doubles with at least a two-break margin on all three courts. With play limited to four singles courts due to the women’s match being contested simultaneously, Caltech took quick first sets at #2-4 singles and clinched within the hour. Sophomore Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) earned his first win at #3, 6-1, 6-1, while freshman Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #4 against their home state foes. Sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) did not take much longer to close out his first victory at #2, 6-0, 6-3.
Pathireddy, meanwhile, finally took an excruciatingly close first set at #1, 7-6, but fell behind by an early break as HSU gained some momentum with set wins at #5 and #6. The senior regained his composure, however, to grind out another 7-6 win for his fourth of the season at the top spot. Freshman Tine Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) claimed his first collegiate victory in rousing fashion soon after, winning an 11-9 tiebreaker.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers, now 2-3 overall, host Vassar College (5-3) for the first of three straight out-of-region matchups on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 2 p.m.
