3/14/17 MHS vs. Whittier Christian:

In their Olympic League and home opener, the Minutemen (3-1) had their way with the much less-experienced Heralds, winning 14 of 18 sets by the score of 6-0. It was Maranatha’s 34th consecutive league win. #1 and #2 singles, Matt Alleman and Bryan Lin, as well as #2 doubles, Matt Leiva and Michael Mathews, completed the “triple bagel” sweep, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, while #3 singles, Jake Scott, and #1 doubles, Drew Sierra and Billy Tan, each lost only one game #3 doubles, Billy Sun and Tony Gao, won their first set, 6-0, before faltering in their final 2 sets, 2-6, 6-7(5).

Maranatha next plays on Thursday at El Monte HS in a non-league match.

3/10/17 MHS vs. Pasadena:

The Minutemen won their second consecutive non-league match against the Bulldogs of Pasadena. After a 3-3 tie after the first round of play, Maranatha pulled ahead in the second round, going 5-1, giving the Minutemen an 8-4 lead. That round was punctuated by an impressive comeback win by freshman Jake Scott, who was down 2-5 to PHS’s #1 singles player, Christian Garcia. In methodical workmanlike fashion, Scott, kept chipping away at Garcia’s lead until the comeback was complete, a 7-5 victory. In the final set of the day, Scott came back once again, this time from a 4-5 deficit against the Bulldogs’ #2 singles player, to win 7-5.

Singles aces and captains, Matt Alleman and Bryan Lin, once again anchored the team by sweepiing singles, giving the team 6 points. The #1 doubles team of captain, Drew Sierra, and Billy Tan swept their final two opponents, 6-0, 6-0 after a tough 6-7(5) first round loss. #2 doubles, Matt Leiva and Michael Mathews, and #3 doubles, Billy Sun and Tony Gao each won won set.
