Sophomore Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) churned out five goals as the Caltech women’s water polo team took down Utica College (N.Y.) to earn their first victory of 2017.
Percin utilized her exceptional swimming ability and quick shot to overpower the Beavers’ out of town foes. She led all players with 14 shots and scored Caltech’s first goal of the game with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. The goal acted as a quick answer to Utica’s first goal which came just 16 seconds prior.
Caltech held a steady lead the entirety of the game thanks to consistent offensive pressure on the counter attack. After outscoring the Pioneers 2-1 in both the first and second periods, the Beavers broke through in with a four-goal third period after wearing the visitors down. Percin’s steady shooting output came in handy and senior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) was as efficient as can be, scoring two goals on her only two shots of the game. Sophomore Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) also scored two goals, both of which came in the final period. Freshman keeper Sarah Kreider (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest) kept the Beavers out in front with eight big saves in what was a mostly clean game. Only seven fouls were called between the two teams.
Head Coach John Bonafede and the Beavers will host another out-of-town opponent, Wisconsin’s Macalester College on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 10 a.m.
