The win marks the first on the year for Pathireddy, one which came soon after a dominant 8-1 victory at #3 doubles.
Freshman Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) continued his stellar season by claiming his singles match first of the five Beavers winners. He won 6-0, 6-1, in the #4 singles slot for his sixth straight victory this season. Top singles player Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) also picked up a key win, 6-2, 6-0, to help Caltech close out the key regional bout against the team ranked directly below in the preseason poll.
The Beavers’ doubles teams created momentum with a sweep before the singles matches began, with Ruthwick and brother Ramsathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) pulling out a stiff test in the top spot. The twins overcame Whitworth’s top two singles players, 9-8 (3) for their fourth victory in six matches.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will resume SCIAC play after a one-month layoff when they host Occidental College (3-7, 0-2) on Friday, Mar. 31 at 2 p.m.
