Caltech men’s tennis sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) has been named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week for Apr. 3, the conference office announced this afternoon.
Nguyen swept all four matches between #2 singles and doubles this past week against West Region No. 13 Whitworth University and Occidental College, helping Caltech into a tie for third place in the conference at 2-1. He teamed with classmate Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) to pick up the duo’s first win in SCIAC competition over Oxy to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead heading into singles, where Nguyen narrowly edged 2016 two-star Tigers recruit Cameron Coe, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Nguyen joins freshman Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) as the second men’s tennis player to earn weekly recognition this season. The Beavers have pulled in eight weekly honors across all sports this year.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble will lead Nguyen and the rest of the Beavers at No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (15-7 overall, 3-1 SCIAC) on Saturday, Apr. 8.
