It would be hard to believe any freshman in Southern California is having more impact on the softball field than Devyn Netz.

The Maranatha pitcher/slugger has put up ridiculous numbers for anyone, let alone a girl in her first 13 varsity games.

Netz kept her dominating reputation in tact on Tuesday.

She struck out 19 batters and hit a 2-run home run to lead Maranatha to its first Olympic League victory of the season.

The Minutemen defeated visiting Valley Christian, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon.

Ashley Park had a safety squeeze that plated Netz.

The Crusaders were able to muster just two infield singles off Netz, and they couldn’t get a base runner beyond first base.

Netz improved to 10-2 and she now has a remarkable 141 strikeouts in just 70 innings pitched.

Aly Granados walked and scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning for MHS.

Maranatha will travel to second-place Village Christian on Thursday at 3:30.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach and athletic director Brian DeHaan: “We tried some new things today and Devyn got some pitches to hit. Our offense executed in spots and Ash’s bunt RBI on the safety squeeze got us out of an 11-inning drought going back to the Whittier Christian game. Today was incredible. We’ve had incredible pitchers in both baseball and softball, but never had 19 strikeouts in a 7-inning game.”

Maranatha freshman Devyn Netz: “Hard work pays off, especially when no one is watching. For my team, coming back and winning this game after losing two league games, as well as losing to two of the best teams we have played so far, is great for us from a team perspective. After losing to those last two teams, we had to accept and realize that we needed to work harder which motivated us to be more aggressive and win together as a team, not individually.”

Olympic League Standings:
Heritage Christian (14-1 overall, 3-0 in league)
Village Christian (9-5, 2-1)
Whittier Christian (8-9, 2-2)
Maranatha (11-2, 1-2)
Valley Christian (5-10-1, 0-3)
