It usually takes a baseball team a little while to get back on track after taking a week off.

But don’t tell that to Maranatha.

The Minutemen last took the field on April 1 when they defeated Oxford Academy.

Fast forward a week and Maranatha dominated Alhambra in a Saturday nonleague doubleheader.

In game one, the Minutemen pounded out 14 hits and downed Alhambra, 9-2.

The story of the second game was the combined no-hitter from Alex Cornwell and Dawson Netz.

Game 1: Maranatha 9, Alhambra 2

Charles Acker went five innings and allowed one run, but the Maranatha lefty didn’t surrender and hit and struck out four.

Evan Chang and Trevor Marrs had two hits apiece and both drove in three runs each.

Dante Campione, Dawson Netz and Max Blessinger also had two hits each for the Minutemen.

Game 2: Maranatha 5, Alhambra 0

Cornwell went the first four innings, walked two and struck out five batters.

Netz didn’t allow a hit or walk over the final three innings and he struck out three.

Eddie Lopez doubled twice and drove in four runs.

Trevor Marrs and Max Blessinger both had two hits.

For the day, Blessinger had four hits, he scored four runs, walked twice and stole three bases.

Marrs hadĀ four hits as well.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach Matt Shupper: “The guys played well today. We didn’t have much rust, but we were not as sharp as we are used to. We didn’t have our same focus and execution which we expect in each game. Saturday games can be tough, different routine, add in a double header and all the sudden a day can get away from you. Alhambra is a solid team that is very well coached. We knew going in that Alhambra would play catch well and can create pressure on a defense at the plate and on the bases. I’m proud of the boys for competing today and for not being satisfied.”

Maranatha pitcher Alex Cornwell: “Teaming for a no-no is always special because it shows that we have each other’s back out there. I felt like I had a decent feel for my curve ball today, and with a competitive opposing team it’s important to have your off-speed. Everyone would prefer to go all 7, but I rely on what my coach’s decisions are, and his decision was right to pull me.”

Maranatha pitcher Dawson Netz: “To be honest, I had no idea we had thrown a no-hitter and was shocked when I was told, because I was so worried about finishing off the game strong so that we could complete the shutout. It’s always fun being surprised by things like this and always makes winning feel much more enjoyable.”
