Caltech women’s tennis freshman Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) has been named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the final week of the regular season.

SCIAC Release

Zhou won both Division III matches she contested at the 117th Ojai Valley Tournament before bowing out after respectable showings against Division I opponents in both singles and doubles. The rookie did not drop a single game in her opening singles victory and went on to take four from #4 seed and eventual champion Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian University. She also teamed with senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) to record a thrilling superbreaker win against Cal Lutheran University, then took the #2 seed and runner-up ACU doubles team down to the wire in a narrow 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

Zhou joins sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and fellow rookie Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) as women’s tennis Athlete of the Week honorees this season. The No. 39 Beavers finish the regular season as one of only two teams in the SCIAC to earn recognition more than once, alongside No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. This also marks the 10th Athlete of the Week honor for Caltech across all sports this academic year.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble will lead Zhou and the rest of the #4 seed Beavers (9-7 overall, 4-3 SCIAC) in the SCIAC Championships this weekend, beginning with a home match against #5 Cal Lutheran (5-10, 3-4) on Friday, May 5 at 3 p.m.
