Grant Fosselman did all he could to put La Salle in a position to clinch a CIF playoff berth on Monday.
With a victory, La Salle would have ensured their spot in the postseason.
The senior lefty went all six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits.
Fosselman walked three and struck out 10 Cathedral batters at East Los Angeles College.
The Phantoms, though, scratched out a 2-1 victory in a rare 6:30 p.m. start.
Freshman Luke Heiberg went 2 for 4, including his first career varsity home run.
Heiberg’s solo shot in the seventh inning was the lone Lancers’ run of the night.
Justin Zuniga went 2 for 3.
Victor Scalzo and Noah Zate had one hit apiece in the Lancers’ six-hit attack.
The Phantoms and Lancers will meet up again Wednesday at the Arcadia County Park at 4.
La Salle and Cathedral now have one win over the other team.
