From Staff Reports:

If there were two guys in the La Salle baseball program that you’d most want to count on in a game that a playoff berth was on the line, it would certainly be Zane Lindeman on the mound and Ethan Patrick at the plate.

La Salle had split two games with Cathedral and the third would determine the last automatic playoff berth from the Del Rey League.

Zane Lindeman already has a no-hitter and 8-inning victory at Bishop Amat under his saddle, but even that pressure doesn’t measure to knowing your entire team is depending on you to keep their season alive.

Lindeman shrugged it all off, and went about his duties.

The junior threw a complete-game shutout on two hits and struck out five.

He improved to 7-4.

But La Salle still needed to score at least one run and through four innings they had failed to do so.

No problem.

Ethan Patrick singled home senior Grant Fosselman in the bottom of the fifth and that turned out to be the game winner.

Patrick had two more hits, which gives him 40 on the season, and ties him with Maranatha’s Eddie Lopez as tops in the area.

Victor Scalzo also had a base hit for La Salle.

The Lancers end in a tie with Serra for second place, but they’ll go in as the league’s No. 3 seed, because the Cavaliers won their series with La Salle, two games to one.

Quotable:

La Salle pitcher Zane Lindeman: “It wasn’t that bad, we’ve played in a lot of high-pressure, low-scoring games before, both this year and last year. This one was obviously different, seeing as how it was pretty much a win or go home, but we were all pulling for each other and my teammates were behind me and we got it done.

La Salle DH Sammy Martinez: “Zane has pitched really well for us in key games that have led to big victories for us. He’s a hard worker and a huge competitor. Whenever he’s on the mound, he aims to throw a complete game, and that just tells you how passionate he is about doing what he does.”

La Salle shortstop Ethan Patrick: “Zane, once again, was a beast on the mound. He pitched very well throughout the game, keeping our hopes alive all game. He was able to give us momentum going into the bottom of the 5th where we were able to get a few runners on. I was able to get an RBI single to get Zane a run. Zane did his thing to close out the game and keep our playoff hopes alive.”

Box Score:
Cathedral: 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-(0)
