Heading into the final week of the regular season, Maranatha needed just one win over Village Christian in their two-game series to earn the Olympic League’s top seed in the playoffs.
Village Christian, though, swept the Minutemen this week, and Thursday’s 5-1 victory at Brookside Park clinched the league championship for the Crusaders.
Sophomore Tobias Plotkin went the distance and shut down the Minutemen on four hits and struck out 10.
Marco Martinez had half of Maranatha’s four hits and drove in the lone run for the Minutemen.
Martinez doubled and homered.
Charles Acker and Casey Popham both had one hit to account for the Maranatha offense.
Kenny Aceves drove in a pair of runs for Village Christian.
Mark Fier went 3 for 3 and scored a run from the Crusaders.
Alex Cornwell went 3 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits.
Dawson Netz went 2 1/3, didn’t allow a hit or a run, and the sophomore struck out four.
Casey Popham allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over 1 1/3 innings Thursday night.
After a 15-2 start to the season, Maranatha went 4-4 over the last 8 games of the regular season.
