From Staff Reports:

Mayfield coach William Eklund asked his players before Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division 7 wild card playoff game how many of his players had experience in a CIF playoff game.

Not a single hand went up.

Anybody who’s ever played in a CIF baseball or softball playoff game can tell you how much pressure is lifted off one’s shoulders when your team scores first.

Mayfield put an insurmountable amount of pressure on Serra when they pushed across eight first-inning runs, and the Cubs cruised past the Cavs, 19-4, on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite not having their ace, Jaylin Domingo, healthy to play, the Cubs rallied behind Giselle De Anda.

De Anda went the distance and allowed just three earned runs on six hits.

She walked one and struck out four to earn the victory in the circle.

Monica De Zern and Julia Watson had huge games.

De Zern went 3 for 5, scored a run, and drove in five runs.

Watson was 5 for 5 with three doubles.

She also had a single and a triple, leaving her just a home run from the cycle.

And she actually hit one off the fence, so she came close.

Six Cubs had at least two hits on Tuesday.

Jack Baggott went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and she drove in two more.

Alyssa Romo had two hits, scored twice and had two RBIs.

Madeline Biscaichipy went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Malayna Domingo drove in a pair of runs and had one hit.

Taylin Yankovich had one hit and scored twice.

Lauren Carter drove in three of Serra’s four runs.

Gail Usher and Rebecca Hall had two hits apiece for the Cavs.

Mayfield will travel to Riverside on Thursday to take on Bethel Christian (11-6) at 3:15.

Quotable:

Mayfield coach William Eklund: “We kept hitting the gaps and driving in runs. We were able to stay within ourselves. I told them before the game and to deal with the nerves that we couldn’t implode. I told them that their teammates can pick you up and you can pick up your teammates. We took them out of their game. They rely a lot on speed. They have five players with 20 or more stolen bases. We played a pressure defense and a no-bunt defense. We forced them to hit it into the corners, which they did, and there were a lot of outs to third base and first base.”

Box Score:
Serra: 0-0-2-0-2-0-0-(4)
Mayfield: 8-0-1-2-6-2-X-(19)
