From CALTECH
Caltech swimming and diving has released its 2017-18 schedule; the season is set to open at home with a SCIAC dual meet against the University of Redlands on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m.
Schedule
The Beavers go on the road to take on the University of La Verne on Saturday, Nov. 18 in their second SCIAC meet of the year. The men’s team defeated ULV, 142-127, for their only SCIAC victory to end the regular season last year. As will be the case for all weekend meets this year, diving will begin at 10:30 a.m. with swimming to follow at 11 a.m.
Caltech will host a relay meet with 2017 Men’s Coach of the Year Paul Hughes’ alma mater, the University of Puget Sound, on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. The Beavers pack in four straight Saturday meets from there in preparation for the championship season. Whittier College hosts a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 13, after which the Beaver women will host Mills College in a dual meet that marked last year’s home opener.
Hughes’ squad heads to back-to-back double-dual meets the following two weeks, with Occidental College at defending champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, Jan. 20 and alongside Cal Lutheran University at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, Feb. 3. Both CMS and Pomona-Pitzer finished the 2016-17 season ranked among the Top 20 teams in Division III on the men’s side, with the CMS women finishing at No. 21 and Pomona-Pitzer falling 2.5 points shy of the Top 25. The Caltech men came up just 10 points short against Oxy in last year’s dual meet.
The Beavers will close out the regular season at home against Chapman University on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The SCIAC Championships will take place Wednesday, Feb. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 24 in Commerce, Calif., with the men’s team coming off an 18-year best finish of sixth place and 28-year high point total of 341, just six points out of fifth place.
SCIAC Newcomer of the Year Tom Gallup (Houston, Texas / Phillips Exeter Acad.) will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships from Mar. 21-24 and be joined by several teammates after placing 11th in the nation in the 100-yard Breaststroke as a rookie to earn Caltech a No. 43 national ranking to end the year.
