From STAFF REPORTS
There is no truth to the rumor that St. Francis is going to designate Paramount High School as their home field for the final 15 games of the season.
All joking aside, St. Francis began the season 1-9 with several close games in which the Golden Knights fell just short.
But along came Paramount and the St. Paul Tournament.
In the last 72 hours, St. Francis has won three consecutive St. Paul Tournament games and all three came at Paramount High School, including the first in a victory over the host Pirates.
Even more encouraging is that for the second time in 24 hours, the Golden Knights rallied for last-inning comebacks to earn a pair of victories.
On Tuesday, St. Francis pushed across three sixth-inning runs and then got a Tyler Quintero walk-off single that scored Christian Muro to cap the comeback, and claim the 4-3 victory.
It was St. Francis’ first victory over a team that sits above the .500 mark in 35 days.
Aaron Treloar went five innings on the hill for St. Francis, and allowed three runs on four hits.
The Conquerors scored all three of their runs in the first inning and then Treloar and Jack Duncan shut them down the rest of the way.
In all, Treloar walked one and struck out a pair of Los Altos batters.
Duncan went the final two innings, didn’t allow a hit or run, walked one and struck out two to earn the victory.
Luis Barcenas was handed the loss, after allowing the walk-off run in the seventh.
Barcenas walked two and allowed three hits.
But St. Francis got back in the game in the sixth off of Robert Valdez.
Valdez allowed three runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings, walked one and struck out five.
Cobi Dougherty doubled and drove in two runs for Los Altos.
Muro finished 1 for 4, Doyle Kane had one hit and an RBI and John Politis doubled for the Golden Knights.
St. Francis will finish St. Paul Tournament play Wednesday when they face Mary Star of the Sea at 9:30 a.m, at Downey High School.
The Golden Knights will give the ball to their ace, lefty Chris Stamos.
Quotable:
SF pitcher Aaron Treloar: “I am really proud of our guys for having the mentality to come through in the clutch like we’ve been doing late in games. I think we’re better suited for that this year. We knew we needed momentum heading back into league play and we’ve worked hard to earn that momentum. I felt like I had all my pitches working pretty well today on the mound. We hope to get a fourth consecutive win tomorrow (Wednesday) and feel good about our chances with Chris Stamos on the mound.”
