The Caltech women’s swim & dive team broke a 15-year-old program record at Sunday’s first home meet of the season against Mills College.

Freshmen Angelina Pan (Toronto, Canada / Havergal College) and Tzarina Shippee (San Diego, Calif. / La Jolla) teamed with sophomores Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) and Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online) to set a new mark in the 200 Free Relay at 1:45.80, beating the previous record by just over one tenth of a second over 14 years after Sarah Mahoney ’02, Saskya Byerly ’03, Jackie Wilbur ’04 and Beth Dorman ’05 set the previous record at the SCIAC Conference Championships back in 2002. The record marks first appearance on the Caltech record board for both Pan and Shippee alongside multi-record holders Percin and Takahashi.

Though the Beavers ultimately lost the meet, the team yielded winners in every race in which they had at least one participant. Pan (25.82) edged program record-holder Takahashi (26.06) in the 50 Free, with the latter later winning the 100 Back. Shippee won both the 100 and 200 Free races, while Percin claimed the 200 IM and 100 Fly before anchoring the record-setting quartet. Sophomore Alix Espino (El Paso, Texas / El Paso) won the 1-meter event unopposed, improving on her Saturday performance by two points.

Head Coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers will now turn their attention to their next combined meet against SCIAC foe Whittier College on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m.
