From Staff Reports:

Maranatha quarterback Kwon Peterson is an athlete that has always had the potential for big things.

He’s quick, he’s agile, bright and he’s got a solid throwing arm.

And if Friday’s season opener is any indication as to what kind of senior year he’ll have, the Minutemen and their fans should be excited.

Peterson threw for four touchdowns and over 300 yards to help lead Maranatha to a 34-7 victory at Rim of the World.

The Minutemen scored on the first play of the game and never looked back.

Awan Parker had two touchdowns and over 200 yards receiving, including a 75-yard strike from Peterson on the first play of the game.

Isaac Fields and Sumner Ortlund also had TD receptions from Peterson.

Jacob Moreno intercepted a Fighting Scots pick and brought it back 52 yards for the score and put the game out of reach.

Not that Maranatha is or would put too much stock into one game’s outcome, but looking back, the Minutemen didn’t get to 34 points on the season last year until the fourth game.

Maranatha (1-0) will host Pasadena next Friday at 7.

The Bulldogs (0-1) fell, 31-25, Thursday night at Buena Park.

Quotable:

Maranatha head coach Steve Bogan: “We got a great effort from everyone tonight. We know we don’t have big numbers, so much is expected and they delivered tonight. Kwon and Awan were outstanding. Kwan threw three early touchdowns and Awan stretched plays all night. We’re happy to start the season 1-0, but we all know there is a lot of work to do.”

Maranatha quarterback Kwon Peterson: “Our expectations were met tonight. I didn’t expect to have the night I had, but we took advantage of mismatches between our receivers and their defenders. I was proud of my teammates and how much effort they put into it. We don’t have a lot of numbers and I saw it (fatigue) in their faces, but they kept fighting. The one area I’d most like us to address is focus. When we got a big lead, I sensed a relaxed feeling and we’re a team that needs to play four complete quarters to get where we want to be. We can’t ever slow down until a game is over.”

Maranatha receiver Awan Parker: “I just felt before the game that Kwon and I were going to have a good game based off the film. We came in confident and scored on the first play of the game and the second play of the second drive. It was an all-around team effort.”
