There is no question that a very talented and confident football program got a wake up call Friday night.
Poly came into the season opener at Temple City, having won 10 of 11 games last season, and most of their core was back.
There was even talk of a 10-0 regular season like a year ago.
And while one loss is just that…one loss, Poly coach Chris Schmoke acknowledged his team was humbled.
Temple City earned a 20-7 victory over the Panthers, who saw one touchdown called back and another was ruled out of the end zone.
Graham Olson had the lone score on a rushing TD.
Matt Queen and Christian Henderson both had interceptions for Poly.
And while they’re disappointed in the offensive futility, it’s just the first game of the season, and it doesn’t in any way impact their Prep League status or playoff scenario.
Schmoke will have his boys ready for next week, and it’s almost guaranteed they’ll be the Panthers of old.
Poly will host Mission of British Columbia next Saturday at 1.
Quotable:
Poly coach Chris Schmoke: It was a tough game for us tonight. We had one TD called back and another called out of the end zone. We struggled offensively for consistency, had some big penalties and turnovers. It was a good wake-up call for us. I give Temple City a lot of credit, as they made plays. For us, film and practice this week will be about getting better. The kids played hard, but we need to develop a better sense of team urgency. We will get there.”
