Perhaps no opponent will play a bigger role against Pasadena area football teams than has the sun/heat.

CIF, prudently, put out a heat warning and suggestions as to how to minimize illness and injuries due to the 100-plus degree week-long weather.

Much of their focus was to remind teams to be overstocked with fluids and to keep a special eye on players who are struggling.

Far too often an athlete will keep themselves in a game if his/her coach doesn’t notice their wearing down throughout a contest, so it’s imperative for adults to look out for signs of cramps and dehydration.

Some unplanned and forced changes due to the weather this week include Poly having to push back their start from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. when they host Mission of British Columbia.

The girls volleyball tournament and boys water polo game will go on as scheduled during Poly’s ‘Fall Tailgate Saturday.

Poly had scheduled all three sports to take place at the same time, but the heat and sun had other ideas.

Last week (‘week zero’) was an unusually pleasant night for football, and still, many players on both sides (of the La Salle-Arcadia game) had bouts with cramps and needed to hydrate before coming back on the field.

And with temperatures at least 15 degrees hotter at game time (7 p.m.) than a week ago, coaches and trainers will have to pay as much attention to their player’s stamina as they will the carrying out of their game plan.

The brutal heat also caused St. Francis to practice at 6 a.m. in preparation for their season opener with Mira Costa tonight at 7.

Muir will be in Las Vegas on Friday to take on Desert Oasis and forecasters say it will be 104 degrees.
