From STAFF REPORTS
St. Francis coach Jim Bonds wasn’t overly thrilled with his Golden Knights week of practice or the way they started Friday night’s nonleague game at Saugus.
But a 26-point second quarter allowed St. Francis to cruise to a 49-20 victory.
Darius Perrantes left the game early after some soreness, but he completed 5 of 8 passes for 97 yards and a TD before taking the rest of the night off.
His lone TD pass was a 36-yard score to senior Andrew Monarrez.
Greg Dulcich replaced Perrantes and finished 4 of 10 for 80 yards, including a 39-yard scoring connection to Blake Howard, and a 13-yard TD pass to Isaac Cordova.
Dulcich also rushed for 56 yards on 9 carries.
Elijah Washington rushed for 102 yards on 18 carries, and the senior captain scored twice.
Kevin Armstead handed St. Francis the momentum when he picked off a Saugus pass and brought it back 60 yards for the touchdown on the last play of the first half.
Armstead had two picks for the game.
St. Francis will travel next Friday to Buena Park at 7.
Box Score:
St. Francis: 9-26-7-7-(49)
Saugus: 7-7-0-6-(20)
Quotable:
St. Francis coach Jim Bonds: “We are happy to come out of this game with a ‘W.’ We did not have our best week of practice and it showed in the first half. Kevin Armstead’s interception return for a TD on the last play of the first half was a huge momentum shift. Darius (Perrantes) was questionable and did not return after taking a big hit in the second quarter. Greg (Dulcich) did an outstanding job stepping in with very few reps this week, and he managed the offense extremely well.”
St. Francis captain Elijah Washington: “In the first half, our team came out slow and a bit complacent as if we couldn’t be beat. As for me, I didn’t do too great either, and I started out slow. But as the game went on, we picked it up and the second half was a whole different story. We came out with a ground-and-pound mentality, and wanted to eat up the clock. Getting the ball that many times felt nice, and I have to give all the credit to the offensive line, who opened up some nice holes and had good pass pro all night.”
St. Francis two-way starter Blake Howard: “I felt we came out flat as a team thinking it would be a walk in the park. Saugus came ready to play and jumped out of the gates early. It took us some time to get our feet on the ground but when we did we started playing much better on all sides of the ball. We faced some adversity with a few injuries but we all rallied and played for each other.”
