The Caltech Men’s Soccer team came closer than ever to a SCIAC victory in 2017, pushing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to extra time on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) got his Beavers off on the right foot — literally when he knocked home a penalty kick just over 20 minutes into the first half. Freshman forward Rohan Mirchandani (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill) created the opportunity by slicing his way into the box only to get tangled up with a Stag defender. Yu finished the game with two of the Beavers’ three shots on goal. Freshman Gianfranco de Castro (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay), who scored the Beavers’ prior game against the University of La Verne, had the other shot on goal.
Similar to the La Verne game, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead into the second half. This time however, the defense remained stout, limiting the Stags’ opportunities for much of the period. CMS finally broke through with a goal in the 74th minute but the Beavers recovered quickly, holding their foes until a last-minute onslaught that saw freshman goalkeeper Joe Como (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) come up big with a game-saving denial on Aidan Johnson with four seconds to go. Como finished the day with seven saves.
The Beavers ultimately succumbed to the Stags in overtime but put a more consistent, balanced soccer game on display. Of CMS’ 22 shots, only nine found a path to Como, which bodes well for the team moving forward.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will look to get over the hump when they face off with host Whittier College on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
