From STAFF REPORTS
Muir’s season has been a roller coaster for the players and coaches alike.
They started the season 2-0 and won by a combined score of 86-0.
The Mustangs then went on a three-game slide in losses to La Salle, Arcadia and Crescenta Valley.
But as any good coach, program and players do, Muir bounced back from adversity and is now on a three-game win streak after defeating Burroughs, 40-17, Friday night in a road game for the Mustangs.
Jonathan Stephens was outstanding.
The Muir captain ran for 224 yards on 20 carries and he scored three TD’s.
Stephens had TD runs of 5, 8, and 70 yards.
Brian Love threw a pair of TD passes.
Love hit Caleb Snowden on a 15-yard score, and had an 80-yard TD to Aryonis Harrison.
Harrison caught 2 passes for 95 yards, including the score.
The win moves Muir into third place in the Pacific League.
Angel Aguilar converted field goals of 25 and 30 yards.
They finish out their regular season schedule on the road next week against first-place Burbank, and they finish up with the Turkey Tussle against Pasadena on November 3.
Quotable:
Muir coach Antyone Sims: “Our guys are just understanding their roles and they’re playing for each other. It was a total team win tonight. The defense played well, and the offense supported the defense whenever Burroughs scored to keep our lead. The two field goals made also give us many more options now when we’re in the red zone. It will help round out our team.”
Muir running back Jonathan Stephens: “Tonight as a team we understood everything that was at stake for this season and we put in the fight and determination throughout the week, and also tonight that was needed to get the victory. I just stepped up as a leader and a captain of the team to do my part in getting the win”
Muir receiver Aryonis Harrison: “The offense played great. The O-line stepped up big time, and I tip my hat to them, because without them, there is no 40 on the scoreboard. We played solid, but we could have played better with penalties, but overall, we played a great game and everyone had a role, including the special teams, offense and defense. I also want to give props to our special teams for the two made field goals.”
