Westridge coach Otto Lacayo complimented Burroughs star Marin Grote for doing everything she could to try and counter the area’s best player, Allison Martinez.

The Tigers senior struggled much of the match (statistically), but Lacayo said Martinez’s 0.019 hitting percentage was way more a credit to Grote than Allison not playing well.

In fact, Martinez did end up with 13 kills, and 12 errors, but Lacayo said she came on late and was a difference maker in the Tigers’ second round, five-set victory at Burroughs on Thursday night.

Westridge vs Burroughs 3

Westridge defeated the Pacific League champions, 25-17, 21-25, 15-25, 25-21 and 15-9, to earn a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

The Tigers will travel to Laguna Beach (21-7) and as of late Thursday night, the match is set for 7, but Lacayo said he’d like to get that to an earlier time if possible.

Makana Meyer had a solid night with 18 kills and 12 digs.

Fellow senior Eryn Boken added 5 kills, one block and 6 aces.

Krystal Raymundo finished with 38 assists, 8 digs and 3 aces.

Julia Cruz chipped in 8 digs for the Prep League champs.

Westridge coach Otto Lacayo: “The beginning was great. We started off with the right kind of energy, and then we got in our heads. The moment got away from us for a little bit. We took it back, though, and it was great watching the team right the ship. Not only did they get their energy back, their execution was at a season high. It was inspired volleyball. First, I want to mention Marin Grote, for Burroughs. She did a great job of leading her team to wins in game 2 and game 3. For us, the seniors started playing the way they were supposed to play and leading the way. I thought Krystal Raymundo was relentless, and played some great defense and helped set up the offense.”
