Despite the fact that Arcadia had a postseason victory under their belts, La Salle didn’t seem to have built up any rust in the 10 days since last taking the court.
The Lancers, the CIF-SS Division 3 top-seed, got a first-round bye, while Arcadia downed Monrovia on Tuesday in four games.
But it was La Salle (23-5) that got off early, and took the first two sets in a relatively dominant fashion.
In the third and final game, though, it was a battle to hold off a feisty Apaches’ team, but La Salle advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Claire Forrest led the way with 15 kills, 3 blocks and an ace.
Forrest was also, it seemed, to be the go-to girl when La Salle most needed to quell an Arcadia run, or begin one of their own.
La Salle moved past Arcadia, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-23, and they will host Yorba Linda (19-14) on Saturday night at 7.
Sofia Sanchez had 8 kills for the Lancers.
Tori Ashkinos added 26 assists.
Sophia Anderson chipped in 5 kills, 11 digs and an ace.
Last, but certainly not least, sophomore Vanessa Ramirez finished with 12 digs, 2 kills and an ace for the Del Rey League champs.
Arcadia, the No. 2 seed out of the Pacific League finished their season 22-7.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Tiare Tuitama: “Arcadia doesn’t have a bad rotation. I was happy with our composure for the most part. Going into the third set, down 0-5, we called a timeout, and we started all over again. We’re really focused on serving and passing well, and when we do that, we have three options.”
La Salle senior Sofia Sanchez: “Starting off, I do think we got that nervous bug, but we came back and took a deep breath and took in what we did in practice. We did a good job of covering and that transformed into our victory.”
La Salle senior Tori Ashkinos: “I think this game we came in with a lot of passion and fire and knew Arcadia would put up a fight. We did a lot of talking between players and that helped us.”
La Salle senior Claire Forrest: “Our biggest strength tonight was our covering. I think I did a good job getting points when we needed them.”
La Salle senior Sophia Anderson: “Their serves were very hard and they got a couple aces. We pulled together and got block after block. I think I kept putting up solid passes for my setters.”
La Salle sophomore Vanessa Ramirez: “(My role) was serving, digging and serve-receive. I need to move my feet (more).”
