The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team had to rally from 2-1 down in sets to defeat host East Los Angeles College, 15-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 15-9, Friday night. It was the second time that PCC went the distance against the Huskies as the Lancers kept their perfect South Coast Conference North Division record intact at 6-0.
PCC (15-9 overall) can clinch the North Division title outright Wednesday night when it faces visiting Mt. San Antonio (13-12, 5-1 in conference) in a 6 p.m. match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. The Lancers are looking for their first SCC title since 2012 when it was co-champions with El Camino in the old 8-team conference. The SCC split into 5-team divisions last season.
Against ELAC, frosh middle blocker Rachel Johnson delivered 11 kills (.333 attack percentage) and was a force at the net with four solo blocks (and served two aces). Letterman outside hitter Vanessa Lopez recorded a double-double on 15 kills (.389) and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Emily Leung tallied 35 assists, 15 digs, and served three aces. Second-year outside hitter Paige Clingman added 11 kills while opposite Kendall Schmedes chipped in eight kills and 11 digs. Sophomore libero Kelsey Sarreal had 15 digs.
Coach Mike Terrill’s Lancers, not ranked in the State Top 25, can also clinch a playoff seeding as an automatic qualifier for winning its conference. Mt. SAC, last year’s division champ, is in a must-win situation if it has any chance of making the postseason. When the two teams met at Mt. SAC on October 11, PCC came away with a 4-set victory.
