No area high school has higher expectations this year than the Pasadena basketball programs.
And we’re not just talking about Coach Tony Brooks’ program, which we call the’Dream Team,’ which is led by stars Bryce Hamilton, Darius Brown II, Darius Mason and Tavian Percy.
PHS’ boys have been incredible and consistently the area’s team to beat, it’s the Bulldogs’ girls team, led by Coach Jett del Mundo, that finds itself atop of the CIF-SS Division 3AA poll that was put out on December 11.
The Bulldogs have started the season 8-2, and that includes a Burroughs Tournament championship over the weekend.
Taurie Magee, Kamesha Moore, Kameria Pigee, Emily Eter and the Cathcart sisters (Nia and Mariah), along with their entire roster are looking to surpass last season’s CIF-SS semifinal run.
PHS won’t play until December 26.
The Bulldogs will face off with La Salle in the Glendora Tournament.
La Salle (8-3) are ranked No. 4 in the CIF-SS Division 3A poll.
The Lancers are also coming off tournament championship.
They went 5-0 in the San Marino Tournament and are one-game ahead of last year’s pace that saw them make a CIF-SS semifinal run..
Julia Macabuhay, the Pasadena Sports Now Girls Basketball Player of the Year, is off to a huge start.
She has led the Lancers in scoring in each of their 11 games, and is also racking up rebound and assist totals as well.
Alyssa Arroyo and Brianna Antillon have been key to La Salle’s success in the first two weeks of the 2017-18 season.
La Salle, as mentioned above will next face Pasadena at the Glendora Tournament on the day after Christmas.
Poly (5-0) just defeated San Marino in the title game of their own tournament and are ranked No. 12 in the CIF-SS Division 4A poll.
Sarah Johnson is off to a great start for the Panthers.
Keara Caragher, Kylie Kishi and Alexis Pappachan are all huge contributors to the Panthers success early on.
Poly will host Mayfield tonight (Tuesday) in their Prep League opener at 3:30.
Flintridge Prep (4-3) opened Prep League action with a 21-point victory at Westridge.
The Rebels are ranked 14th in Division 3A.
Prep will travel to South Pasadena on Friday at 5.
