From STAFF REPORTS
Heading home from Las Vegas, some may underestimate what a 2-2 showing at the Tarkanian Classic meant to the Muir basketball program.
Don’t let Saturday’s 77-74 overtime loss to Timpview of Utah cloud your thoughts, the Mustangs are a better basketball team than they were before they took that trip up the 15 North.
The Mustangs have seen the 1-2 offensive punch of Hunter Woods and Haleem Jenkins step up.
Woods had 25 more points on Saturday and 5 rebounds and Jenkins added 20 points and 5 rebounds.
The 6-foot-7 forward (Woods) also had 3 assists.
Tiyon Martin finished with 10 points and 5 assists.
Nick Moore chipped in 8 points and 2 rebounds and Simaine Stewart Jr. added 6 points and 5 assists.
Tasson Aubry also chipped in with 5 points and 5 rebounds.
The good news for Muir is they competed in three of their four games and could easily have been 3-1 in Vegas.
And even in a loss, the Mustangs learned the hard way that if they don’t do the little things well, like making free throws, it’s going to cost them.
But those are the kind of realities and lessons that make any team better and more prepared for league play in a couple of weeks.
Muir begins play at the Damien Tournament against Claremont (8-4) at 4:30 on Tuesday.
