From STAFF REPORTS
Zane Lindeman looked like Zane Lindeman on Friday afternoon in the Del Rey League opener for both schools.
Early in the season, it seemed the reigning Pasadena Sports Now Pitcher of the Year hadn’t quite found his stuff.
We found out later that much of that (not finding his spots/velocity) was due to being under the weather for almost two weeks.
But on Friday, Lindeman looked like the big-game pitcher that he is.
The 6-foot-4 senior went the distance and shut own visiting Serra, 1-0, at Arcadia County Park.
He allowed just three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 8 on 84 pitches.
La Salle couldn’t really figure out Serra’s John Jackson either.
Jackson went all six for the Cavaliers and allowed just two hits and an unearned run in the first inning.
But that was all Lindeman needed.
Ethan Patrick reached base in the bottom of the first on a two-base error, advanced to third on a balk, and the Lancers shortstop scored on a Luke Heiberg ground out.
Mark Daley, a La Salle sophomore who had one of the two Lancers’ hits Friday, saved Lindeman’s shutout in the sixth inning.
With one out and a runner on third, a Serra batter hit a shot to center that both Lindeman and coach Eddie McKiernan had already written off as deep enough to tie the game at 1-1.
But Daley got behind it, caught it in rhythm and threw a strike to the plate to end the Cavaliers only threat of the game.
La Salle catcher Brennan Mace had the only other Lancers hit on the day.
La Salle will host St. Paul on Tuesday at 3:15 in another Del Rey League battle.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Eddie McKiernan: “Zane gave it everything he had. His first two outings he was sick and getting over a fever and still did well enough to help his team win. And today, he was back in rhythm. Mark Daley’s throw from center, when it came off the bat we were thinking ‘tie game,’ but he got behind the ball and a perfect throw. Seven games in, I am most happy with the camraderie of the team and for each other. The one thing I’d like to see us fix is to have more competitive at-bats.”
La Salle senior Zane Lindeman: “I wasn’t happy with my first two outings, because I was locating the ball well. My off-speed pitches were flat and I wasn’t getting any swing and missed on them. My velocity was down, and I didn’t like the way it was coming out of my hand. But today, I found it more. My fast ball was down and missing barrels with it. I realized in the third and fourth innings I had my stuff. Mark’s play in center was huge for us. I thought it was for sure it was a run, but Mark made one of the best throws from the outfield since Kyle Cuellar (current UCLA player). When he made the play, it gave me the confidence to go out there and get three more outs.”
