From STAFF REPORTS

The St. Francis baseball program has won more games in the last 48 hours than it had in the first 10 games combined.

And oddly enough, both came at Paramount High School.

To be fair, though, St. Francis has played a schedule from hell and the miles traveled to get to these games was challenging in and of itself.

After beginning the season 1-9, the Golden Knights defeated Paramount (6-3) on Saturday morning in a St. Paul Tournament game.

Fast forward to Monday afternoon, and St. Francis, playing on the same field and in the same tournament, rallied late to defeat San Pedro, 4-1 behind a strong effort on the mound.

Hayden Byrnes went the first four innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

Byrnes walked four and struck out four.

San Pedro got one fifth-inning run off of Brandon Markarian on one hit and three walks to take the 1-0 lead.

St. Francis tied the game in the sixth when Doyle Kane’s sacrifice fly scored Matt Odom.

In the seventh, Tyler Quintero and Doyle Kane had RBI bases on balls and the Golden Knights scored another on a San Pedro error.

Chris Stamos, the Golden Knights’ ace, pitched the sixth and seventh innings and mowed down the Pirates.

It took Stamos just 12 pitches to get the final six outs.

The St. Francis offense combined for five hits on Monday.

Christian Muro went 1 for 2 with a run scored and he walked twice.

Mikey Kane had one hits and scored a run.

Matt Odom scored twice and collected one hit.

Aaron Treloar went 2 for 4 in the clean up spot for St. Francis.

Doyle Kane didn’t pick up a hit, but he did have a game-high two RBIs for the Golden Knights.

St. Francis will face Los Altos at 12:30 on Tuesday at Paramount in another St. Paul Tournament game.

Quotable:

St. Francis coach Aaron Dorlarque: “We pitched well enough to stay in the ball game. Their guy kept us off-balance and was in command. Byrnes kept us in the game and has a tremendous amount of talent. When he’s relaxed, he gets out of his own way and can be great. We’re seeing glimpses of how good Hayden Byrnes can be. Chris Stamos is our senior leader and ace on the mound and as he goes, we go. He competes and gives us a chance to win. We have confidence when he’s on the mound. I think we’re starting to play complete baseball. Our defense has been there all year. We missed some opportunities early offensively, but we came through late.”
