It was largely a Maranatha and Valley Christian affair in the Olympic League Prelims, the season ending tournament pitting the top 8 singles players and top 8 doubles teams in the league. MHS and VCS each had 3 singles players and 3 doubles teams qualify, leaving only 2 spots each left for the rest of the league.

The Minutemen dominated the first round, winning 5 of their 6 matches.

In singles, #1 seed, Daniel Guan made quick work of the #8, 8-0, while #3, Jake Scott, won 8-4 versus the #6. #5, Billy Sun, lost 2-8 to the #4 seed..

In doubles, MHS took the top 3 seeds. #1 seed, Matthew Leiva/Michael Mathews had a bye, while #2, Billy Tan/Kenny Cho won, 8-2, and #3, Tony Gao/Ben Smith, won, 8-3.

In the singles semi-finals, Guan advanced against #4, Peter Weaver, of VCS, 6-2, 6-3, while Scott lost to #2, Ethan Abelowitz, of Tarbut V Torah, 1-6, 0-6.

#1, Guan (23-1 in league), and #2 Abelowitz (23-1 in league) will play in tomorrow’s championship match. The winner will not only determine the tourney champ, but the league MVP. They split their two matches this season. #3 Scott and #4 Weaver will play for 3rd.

In the doubles semi-finals, Leiva/Mathews avenged last year’s semi-final defeat by defeating #4, Weaver/Sandoz, of VCS, 6-3, 7-6(4). In the other semi-final, it was an all-MHS affair as Tan/Cho defeated Gao/Smith, 6-3, 6-0.

#1 Leiva/Mathews (24-0 in league) will face teammates, #2 Tan/Cho (23-1 in league), for the doubles championship, while #3 Gao/Smith and #4 Weaver/Sandoz will face off for 3rd.
