On the final day of the Olympic league prelims, Maranatha finished in second and third place in singles play, and first, second and fourth places in doubles play.

Maranatha #1 singles Daniel Guan faced off in a rubber match against Tarbut V. Torah’s Ethan Abelowitz. Guan took the first two games of the match easily, but quickly lost the next six games in losing the opening set. The second set was hotly contested but Abelowitz would prevail and win 2-6, 6-7 (5), to become the Olympic League MVP.

In an all MHS matchup, #1 seeded Matthew Leiva and Michael Mathews took the court for the first time in an official competition against #2 seeded Billy Tan and Kenny Cho. The teams split the first two sets at 6-3 apiece. In the final set, Leiva/Mathews raced to a 5-2 lead but were thwarted by a late charge from Tan/Cho, who won the next three games to knot the score. In the end, Leiva/Mathews upheld their #1 seeding and took home the doubles title with the 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

In the third place matches, Jake Scott dominated Valley Christian’s Peter Weaver 6-3, 6-1 to cap off a fine singles season. The senior duo of Tony Gao and Ben Smith played tough but fell 3-6, 4-6 in finishing fourth.

The Minutemen will now look forward to next week when they enter Team CIF competition in Division III for the first time.
