Mayfield coach Hugo Ayala plays his cards very close to the vest.
Even after big wins, he’ll say the focus is just on getting better as a unit.
And so far, so good for the first-year Cubs’ coach.
Mayfield improved to 4-0 in Prep League play with their sweep over a hot Flintridge Prep team.
The Cubs snapped the Rebels five-match win streak by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-18 on Thursday evening.
Ellie Watkins had 16 assists and 2 aces for Mayfield, while Haley Eaves added 5 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces.
Catie Sanchez finished with 5 kills and Charlotte Pizante contributed 3 kills and a block.
For Prep, Jada Gritton led the way with 9 kills and Courtney Johnson had 8 kills.
Ellen Chang had a team-high 16 digs for the Rebels.
Mayfield doesn’t play again until next Thursday when they host Westridge at 5:45.
Prep won’t be on the court until September 18, and will travel to Westridge at 5:15.
