From Staff Reports:
In a battle of unbeaten football programs Saturday night at South Pasadena High School, both Poly and Brentwood weren’t going to settle for anything less than a decision.
Last season, at Brentwood, the Eagles and Panthers settled for a tie after three scoreless overtime sessions.
And after a Robbie Wilson to Colin Mathews touchdown connection in the second half Saturday night, Poly took a 20-14 lead, and things were looking good for the Panthers.
But to Brentwood’s credit, the Eagles took the ensuing kickoff back 81 yards for the TD, and they went on to score the game’s next 23 points.
This young Poly team didn’t go down without a fight, but Brentwood held on to defeat the Panthers, 37-27, in a nonleague match up.
Wilson threw four touchdowns in all, despite the fact that he missed a few series’ due to a in-game injury.
He hit Colin Mathews on a pair of TD tosses, and also connected with Franco Alonso and Trent Steele on single scores.
They came on passes of 27, 27, 29 and 12 yards.
Poly will be back on the field this coming Friday afternoon when they host Temple City at 3.
The Rams (2-1) are coming off a 26-14 victory over Gabrielino on Friday.
Quotable:
Poly coach Chris Schmoke: “I was proud of the kids’ effort. We played hard. We obviously had some breakdowns on special teams that hurt us and did not always execute, but those things can be corrected. Give credit to Brentwood, they are a good team and well-coached. We will keep working and keep improving.”
