With just 10 guaranteed games in a season, every week is crucial.
And ‘week three’ of 2018 was no different.
Muir bounced back from week two’s adversity and decimated the Rancho Christian defense.
Maranatha got a much-needed shot in the arm with a four-point victory at Campbell Hall.
Blair won its second consecutive game after 32 straight losses heading into week two.
St. Francis, for the second time in two road games thus far, fell behind early, fought back mightily, but ultimately fell in defeat.
La Salle and Marshall saw their struggles continue in blowouts, and both fell to 0-4 this season.
Muir (3-0) had every chance to go out Thursday night and lay an egg after seeing 10 of its players suspended by CIF from an altercation the week prior.
The Mustangs though, didn’t play victim, and they came out and out-classed Rancho Christian with superior speed and talent.
Brian Love threw three TD’s and was on target all night.
Love hit Aryonis Harrison to get an early lead after the 50-yard score and Nick Moore, Amaris Harrison and Tyron Clark all played huge Friday.
Now Muir gets its first huge test of the season.
The Mustangs will host Crescenta Valley in the Pacific League opener Friday, and is a battle of the only two teams in their league that have yet to lose a game.
Maranatha (2-2) might not have thought of Friday night’s game at Campbell Hall as a must-win, but it seemed to have that kind of feel to it.
The reason being, the Minutemen had dropped a pair of games they felt they should have won, and because their offense wasn’t as fluid as first-year coach LaVar Arrington would like to see.
But after falling behind early, junior QB Enrique Garza connected with Jack Goodman on 15 and 20-yard touchdowns.
Sabien Rivera was insane on the defensive side of the ball.
The MHS senior had four sacks, including a safety in the fourth quarter, and the Minutemen left North Hollywood with a 17-13 victory.
Blair (2-2) had gone nearly four years without a win until they defeated La Verne Lutheran last Saturday.
Six days later, the Vikings won their second consecutive when they traveled 115 miles to earn a 15-6 victory at Maricopa.
The program hadn’t won back to back games in four years. .
Ajani Joseph and German Jara accounted for the Vikings offense.
Joseph scored on a 45-yard run, and Jara dashed in from 20 yards.
For the second consecutive week, Blair’s defense held an opponent in check.
St. Francis (1-2) fell to 0-2 on the road after its 35-21 setback at Westlake.
Westlake took a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and scored three times on special teams misplays by St. Francis.
Darius Perrantes ran for one TD and threw two more.
But Perrantes was picked three times for the first time in his career at St. Francis.
The Golden Knights saw Westlake score on a blocked punt, an onside kick and a 90-yard punt return.
For the second time in two road games, the Golden Knights fell behind big (21 points Friday), made a furious comeback, but in the end, they fell short.
SF will host Saugus this Friday at 7.
The Centurions (4-0) are coming off a 42-6 victory over Thousand Oaks.
Poly (2-1) fell Saturday night, 37-27, to Brentwood at South Pasadena High School.
Robbie Wilson had a huge effort in the loss.
The senior threw four touchdowns to keep the Panthers in the hunt throughout.
Wilson hit Colin Mathews twice and both Franco Alonso and Trent Steele had one TD apiece.
The Panthers will look to bounce back Friday afternoon, when they host Temple City at 3.
The Rams (2-1) are coming off a 26-14 victory over Gabrielino.
