Olympic League play got underway, matching last season’s league champs against a Heritage Christian team that was winless in 2017. Though most of the Lady Minutemen were suffering from flu-like symptoms, It didn’t make the match any closer, as MHS won the first 16 sets of the day (10 by a score of 6-0) before the Warriors’ #1 team defeated MHS’s #3 doubles (6-0).
Today’s match marked the successful singles debut of Stella Wang at the #3 slot. Wang played a consistent brand of tennis, going 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. #2 Malena Smith was equally impressive, posting a 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 score line. #1 singles, Madison Kane, swept her opponents without losing a game for the fourth straight contest, putting her at 15-0 on the season.
Doubles showcased two new pairings, with Amanda Yee moving up to #2 doubles to join forces with Georgia Wilder, and Molly Mittelberg joining Shuhan Yang at the #3 doubles position. Both new combinations showed potential, with Wilder/Yee sweeping 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, and Yang/Mittelberg going 6-0, 6-2, 0-6. #1 doubles, Michael Wilkins/Aria Haver-Hill, continued their dominant play, sweeping, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, matching Kane’s 15-0 start to the season.
After 5 matches on the road to open the season, Maranatha plays their home opener on Tuesday at Occidental College against league rival, Whittier Christian, the only other team to win a league title (’16) besides Maranatha in the last seven seasons.
