From STAFF REPORTS
The only thing better than La Salle ending their four-match Del Rey League losing streak was to beat a program above them in the standings.
Before senior night on Tuesday, Bishop Montgomery had just one loss in league play and the Lancers had lost four consecutive league matches and were on the outside looking in at a potential CIF-SS playoff berth.
The easy thing to do would be to pack it in and call it a year.
But La Salle’s volleyball programs have arguably been their most consistently successful programs on campus, and even during dark stretches, there is still a lot of pride at the school.
La Salle showed up big time on Tuesday night and swept the Knights to emerge with a postseason possibly still in reach.
The Lancers earned the 25-16, 25-18 and to seal the deal, a 30-28 victory in the third set.
Chloe Howell was back from injury and Chloe Howell did what Chloe Howell does.
She dominated.
In all, the Lancers’ sophomore finished with a match-high 25 kills, and also added 7 digs.
Elle Harrity had a big game with 13 kills and 2 aces.
Vanessa Ramirez was also back in the lineup and she had a team-best 29 digs, and the junior contributed 3 aces, 2 assists and a kill.
Devon Nardoni led La Salle with 41 assists, and finished with 5 digs, 3 kills and an ace.
Anna Nuzzi added 5 kills, Carly Kejmar had 4 kills and Kirsten Yu contributed one kill.
La Salle will end their regular season schedule with another league match at first-place St. Joseph on Thursday at 6.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Shari Iwatani: “The seniors did a great job tonight stepping up and being leaders on the court. They brought knowledge, confidence and energy to tonight’s match. It was great to win in three (games) to a great team like Bishop Montgomery, especially after a rough losing streak, but we had two starters out last week and another player got injured during the Gabrielino Tournament over the weekend. It forced everyone to have to step up. Everyone has learned to contribute, and with Chloe and Vanessa back, mixed with the new found confidence of other players, Bishop Montgomery had no clue what him them tonight.”
Del Rey League Standings Through October 2:
St. Joseph (24-5 overall, 4-0 in league)
Bishop Montgomery (15-8, 4-2)
La Salle (21-10, 3-4)
St. Paul (25-8, 2-3)
St. Anthony (19-10, 1-5)
