The bad news for Poly girls tennis coach Michael Guice was his three singles players won just 2 of 9 matches versus Temple City Wednesday at the Cal Tech tennis courts.
But the good news was the Panthers’ doubles team won 7 of its 9 matches, which led to a 9-9 tie.
As the rules go, you take the number of games each team wins in its 18 total set scores, and Temple City was awarded the win with an advantage of 76-69 in the tiebreaker.
Tara Adarker and Elisabeth Bogaard, Poly’s No. 1 doubles team, swept Temple City with scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4.
The No. 2 tandem of Caitlin Wu and Yumi Balthazar went 2-1, as did No. 3 Saya Desai and her partner, Anais Singh-Gee.
Shalini Haupt dropped her first match to Temple City No. 1 singles player Katherine Wa, 2-6, but Haupt won her final two matches, 6-4, and 6-1.
Poly’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles’ players went a combined 0-6, but it is just the second team match of the year for the young Panthers.
“We started out great, but singles was where we fell short,” Guice said. “For the next match, we are seriously considering a change in our singles lineup.”
Poly will travel to Westridge next Tuesday at 3:15 as the Panthers and Rebels square off.
