Maranatha has hit a minor speed bump in what was a smooth road over the last month or so.

The Minutemen had won 9 of 10 matches.

But after getting swept last week in a nonleague match at La Canada, Valley Christian of Cerritos handled Maranatha in four, 25-12, 25-13, 22-25 and 25-11 on Tuesday night in pretty impressive fashion.

Aubrey Schwieger was on fire for the Crusaders, with a match-best 20 kills.

Madison Holmes added 11 kills for first-place Valley Christian (13-11, 4-0).

Having lost 6 of its last 7 sets, Maranatha coach Eli Cuenca said there is still much work to do.

The Minutemen will get back on the court today (Wednesday) at Village Christian with sole possession of second place at stake.

Hannah Becker led Maranatha with 12 kills and a block.

“We’ve really been struggling on our serve-receive,” Cuenca said. “It’s been sort of our Achilles heel the last two matches. It hasn’t allowed to get into a rhythm offensively and it just kind of sets the tone. We need to make some different serve-receive lineups and stay focused on how we can play volleyball.”

Senior outside hitter Mikaela Ashworth had 9 kills, 2 aces and a block for Maranatha (11-5, 2-1)

“We need to tighten up our serve-receive, because if we can get a good pass, we can set up our offense,” Ashworth said. “We were taking care of the ball better and doing the simple stuff (during the win streak). I need to clean up my game and encourage my teammates to do the best they can. I am excited about (Wednesday) because we can take this loss and use it to clean up our game.”

When asked what he hopes his Minutemen take out of Tuesday’s loss, Cuenca said, “every game in our league is big and competitive. We have to come out quick and not start slow,” Cuenca said.

Kaylee Westra had 13 digs and 5 aces for Valley Christian and Megan Lim added 14 digs.
