Poly and Bosco Tech will use Friday night’s nonleague showdown as a final test run as both enter the crucial part of their schedules.
The Panthers come in 6-0 and off a 42-12 victory over Boron last Saturday.
Bosco Tech (3-4, 1-1) claimed its first South Catholic League victory in nearly four years last week when the Tigers defeated St. Bernard, 44-6.
Rey Castellanos has been remarkable all year for Bosco Tech.
Castellanos has rushed for 909 yards on just over 100 carries, including eight rushing touchdowns.
Daniel Uballez has also been big of late, as the Tigers running back has five TDs.
Poly’s John Genske had a breakout game last week with two TD passes and rushed for another.
Christian Henderson’s two 85-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns last week helped the Panthers dominate Boron.
Bosco coach Branden Jones: “Poly is 6-0 for a reason. They are well coached and have good players on both sides of the ball. We’ll need Castellanos and Uballez and our offensive line to make some big plays and keep the chains moving. Defensively, we’ll have a good test with an offense that can beat you with the pass or the run. We are trending up and even though this is a nonleague game, we start every week 0-0, and look for a victory. We can’t look ahead to our final two league games with a great team like Poly standing in front of us.”
Poly coach Chris Schmoke: “Bosco is big and physical and we’ll need to match their level of physicality and intensity during the game. Again, our defense will need to step up and stop the run, and our offense will need to be balanced and unpredictable. (QB) John Genske will need to continue to play like he did against Boron to give us the run/pass option. I am looking for our seniors to continue to step up and lead. With only 10 regular season games and a new playoff format, all our games are important and we need to continue to cut down on mistakes and focus on execution. This is our last game before league starts, so we hope to be firing on all cylinders.”
