Sophomores Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online) and Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) each claimed a first-place finish in Caltech women’s swim & dive’s first meet in over a month on Saturday.
Facing host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Occidental College in a double dual meet, the shorthanded Beavers were never a threat to match either SCIAC foe in scoring, but instead focused on individual performances. Percin swam a 2:16.72 in the 200 Fly to earn her victory, while Takahashi threw down a 1:00.77 100 Fly to claim that event. Percin also notched a second-place finish on short rest in the 500 Free, while freshman Angelina Pan (Toronto, Canada / Havergal Coll.) narrowly out-touched the program record-holder in the 100 Free to place second.
Freshman Tzarina Shippee (San Diego, Calif. / La Jolla) showed the most improvement following winter training of any member on the team. The rookie shaved nearly a full second off her 50 Free time from November, as well as six seconds in the 100 Back and seven in the 100 Fly. Sophomore Alix Espino (El Paso, Texas / El Paso) rounded out the solid team showing with a five-point improvement on the 1-meter diving board, posting her first score over 100 points (102.20).
