Standing No. 13-ranked on the CCCSIA State Top 20, the Pasadena City College women’s basketball team found itself needing a victory Wednesday after two losses that opened South Coast Conference play. PCC sandwiched two inconsistent quarters with outstanding play in the middle quarters in a 59-49 North Division win over Chaffey at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers are 17-5 overall and now 1-2 in the SCC North. Chaffey fell to 11-10 and 1-2.
A 3-point bomb by Danielle Sokolgz in the final seconds gave the Panthers a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. PCC’s defense buckled down as the Lancers would dominate the second and third quarters. Pasadena outscored Chaffey, 35-15, in the middle 20 minutes, leading 31-25 at halftime and building it to as much as 51-31 on a put back basket by Ilianna Blanc.
The Panthers wouldn’t quit and got the PCC lead down to eight, 57-48, on a layup by Raynisha McGee. Blanc drove the lane for a layup with 1:20 left that put the game away.
PCC’s post players controlled things as forward Blanc (16 points, five assists, three steals), center Alisa Shinn (17 points, seven rebounds) and center Kailyn Gideon (12 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks) combined for 45 of the Lancers’ points.
For Chaffey, Victoria Sosa came off the bench to tally 15 points.
The Lancers’ defense totaled 12 blocks, 13 steals and limited Chaffey to a 29.1 percent accuracy from the field.
The Lancers will try to even their conference on Friday when they play at Rio Hondo in a 7 p.m. division tip-off.
